Wicca, Wiccan and Witchcraft are terms that get tossed around quite a bit in websites, groups and discussions of "The Old Religion" all of which seem to have as many meanings as there are people using the terms. Here at White Witch Wares we use these words to describe the products we sell on our website. We offer our products to help others practice their faith regardless of what meaning each visitor applies to these terms. Though it wasn't always this way, as history has it Wicca, Wiccan and Witchcraft had a humble, troubled past. Soaked in terror, horrible torturous trials and dark forbidding treatment, in a time where a website such as ours simply could not have existed and no doubt we all would have been prosecuted for even conceiving such a place where tools of the trade and witchcraft items could be displayed, discussed, shared and bought.
Witchcraft it would seem has always been associated with dark, evil Satan worship. A concept brought about by ignorance, terrifying trials and out right blasphemy. It wasn't until the 1900's when Dr. Gerald Brousseau Gardner began to openly write and publish books on the topic supporting and confirming theories of Dr. Margaret Murry that public awareness began to increase and a clearer more concise meaning of witchcraft, it practices and purposes were exposed.
Contrary to popular belief witchcraft was not the devil worshiping, evil doing, practice it had long been portrayed as but rather a faith that followed a path closely connected to nature with a variety of diverse structures within it. Each being calm, meditative and deeply personal all having one underlying guiding commandment for its followers, a simple statement that summed up the beliefs, practices and teachings "Do what thou will but harm none." A peaceable faith founded on those few words, though prosecuted for centuries, condemned, mocked and tragically distorted this peaceful religion known as Witchcraft has finally emerged from the dark into the light and is now practiced by millions around the world often called Wicca or Wiccan and known to many as "The Old Religion."
The first Witch in America to step forward was Raymond Buckland. He was initiated in Perth, Scotland by Garders high priestess. He set out to spread knowledge of the craft, remove misconceptions that veiled it and teach it for what it was a religion of love, joy and happiness that was obtainable in the here and now life as it is lived rather then in the after life as Christianity taught and preached.
Witchcraft is a serious religion involving worship of deities, spells, charms, athames, chalices, wands, circles and more. Practiced in secret for generations and clouded in misconception, mystery and terrifying un-truths this faith has once again been brought out available to those curious enough to see past the hype and horror to learn the reality and join others in the faith.
Thus we come to the present day where covens abound throughout every nation of the world and solitary witches are abundant as drops of rain. Books, websites and stores are readily accessible and anyone can become a witch as all are welcomed so long as one remembers the underlying connection that binds every coven and every witch " An it harm none, do what thou will."
